Fibula with hunting scene
2nd century AD
Strasbourg, ruelle Saint-Médard
Room 12

Fibulas were common in Roman times and were used to hold together folds of clothing or to fasten a coat to one's shoulder. They were worn by both men and women, and their shape varied depending on the period and the changing taste of customers. Fibulas in the shape of animals are particularly popular: birds, horses, deer and fish, as well as fanciful animals, are frequently depicted on these small ornaments. Here, a hare is being chased by a dog. The subject of hunting is a reminder that this was an activity greatly appreciated by rich Gallo-Romans.
