In the city

The staircase, with its geometrical guardrail, was designed by Van Doesburg. It begins on the mezzanine landing and leads to the first floor. The rectangular three-flight stairwell is lit by a large stained glass window which, like the painted decor, is attributed to Jean Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. The long grey and blue vertical bands, which are the same width as the steps, contrast with the broken lines of the staircase and accentuate the upward movement. The stained glass window, a model of which can be seen at the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, is attributed to Arp. It consists of thirty rectangular pressed glass tiles, in alternating shades of grey, blue and beige.
