"Foyer-Bar"
1928

The "Foyer-Bar" was designed by Van Doesburg as a link between the "Salle des Fêtes" (Festivities Room) and the "Ciné-Dancing". In this open space, you could have a drink while watching the film being shown in the "Ciné-Dancing". As a connecting space, it corresponded to Van Doesburg’s idea of "fluctuation", encouraging Aubette visitors to circulate between the different spaces in the building.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp has been credited with the decoration of the Foyer-Bar. On the ceiling, walls and floor, rectangular surfaces in shades of grey and red give the visitor an unprecedented perceptual experience. Instead of playing a purely ornamental role, colour directly contributes to shaping architectural space.
