In the city

This remarkable spiral staircase dates from the same period as the Renaissance wing of the Oeuvre Notre-Dame, bearing witness to the technical virtuosity of the architect, Hans Thomann Uhlberger. Its most striking characteristics are its open well and the inner banister with its sinuous spiral movement. It exhibits the same curious mixture of the flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance styles as the rest of the building. On the underside of the inner banister and the vaulting are mouldings featuring knotty branch motifs in the late-Gothic tradition.

If you look carefully, you will see that some of the columns of the banister are engraved with the stone-masons’ marks.

A number of other Strasbourg buildings still have open-well spiral staircases of this type.
